Albert Holloway of Oakland, California, introduced corn nuts to the US in 1936. He sold them to pub owners as a snack to go with beer. Olin's Brown Jug Toasted Corn, later renamed CornNuts.
Holloway discovered a Peruvian maize variety called Cuzco corn with big kernels. He intended to incorporate this type of kernel in his toasted corn snack, so his company worked on a California-grown Cuzco hybrid. His business marketed this hybrid cultivar as CornNuts in 1964. Although today's Corn Nuts are not the same size as Cusco corn, they are nevertheless delicious.
