Since the early twentieth century, navy bean soup with smoked ham has been on the menus of the Senate's restaurants every day. Because of its importance in American culture, the soup has earned the moniker "Senate Bean Soup."

White pea bean is another name for the Navy Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). The United States Navy began giving these beans as a normal ration for sailors in the 19th century due to their excellent nutritional value, low cost, and long storage life.

Because this bean develops foam when cooked, skim the water frequently.
